2003 NFPW Conference
How to get published in 30 days or less
“If you want lots of money, you have to give publishers what they want,” said John Riddle, a self-taught writer who earns a six-figure income and has published 32 books in the past four years.
Riddle suggested that aspiring writers make a list of their top five passions. Focus your writing on those topic areas. His main suggestion for increasing writing possibilities is to look for jobs in these areas:
- Job boards. For a listing of more than 40 Web sites that feature job listings for writers, visit www.newsjobs.net.
- Trade journals. Send e-mails promoting yourself to editors of your favorite trade journals.
- Writers conferences. Meet editors from publishing houses and gain a little push to get started.
- Surf the Web. Find Web sites that use freelance writers and send an e-mail.
- Book publishers. Make a list of publishers you would like to write for. Send an e-mail to the editor in charge of “work-for-hire” book projects and ask to be considered.
More freelancing tips can be found at Riddle’s Web site at www.ilovetowrite.com.
